If you’re looking to build a premium gaming computer in the
$1000 price range you might want to take a look at the Asus Strix H270F for
your build. It is designed for the non-overclockable intel chips and it has
most of every feature you could want.
The motherboard is about $140 but despite its price, it’s
still a good deal. Why is this a good deal you ask? This is because this is the
non-overclockable version of Asus’ Z270E motherboard which costs around $200 or
even more. Essentially you save around $60 if you’re not planning to overclock.
The thing that is not included is the ability to overclock CPUs such as the K
chips because it’s got the H270 chipsets instead of the Z270. It also doesn’t
have the built in Wi-Fi adapter. It requires hardwired networking only. Lastly,
it also does not support NVDIA’s SLI feature however it does still support
AMD’s crossfire technology.
Other than things mentioned earlier, it’s still basically the
same thing. Even the aesthetics looks the same, it’s hard to tell which is
which when you compare it to Asus’ flagship motherboard the Z270E which costs
around $200.
It still has 64GB of system RAM, 2x M.2 Slots (NVMe &
SATA), 2x x16 PCI-e slots, USB 3.0 & 3.1 (Both Type A and Type C) and
lastly it also has Asus’ Supreme FX 8 channel HD sound system. The soundchip of
the H270F is superior to those motherboards that cost less. Of course there are
motherboards that cost lesser than $140 that works with an i5 7600 CPU like B250
motherboards that cost for as low as $65 but those motherboards do not provide
the premium features of this motherboard.
It also has cool RGB lighting support with the Asus Aura
which is one of the premium features that this board offers. It doesn’t just
provide RGB lighting but also syncs the lighting with your other peripherals.
Also, if you have a Republic of Gamers video card, then the software will sync
and combine the lighting of both your graphics card and your motherboard
essentially giving the user a nice synchronized RGB setup. There are also other
Republic of Gamers features that the low priced motherboards do not have. Those
motherboards are budget options so if you’re on a tight budget, go on ahead
with those however, if you want premium and other cool features and are willing
to spend a few more bucks; you might want to take a look at this.
Asus Strix H270F Review – Whats in the Box?
I really like the packaging of the Strix H270F. The box is
colored mainly black. If you look at the front it has the word Strix diagonally
placed to the left while the motherboard along with its full name is on the
right of the box. The stylized neon colored Strix makes the packaging pop and
this behind a black background will give you a really cool effect.
You’ll find a few accessories as well and we’ll go through
all of them one by one. The Strix H270F like many motherboards, also come with
a rear I/O shield. The I/O shield looks very premium too as it’s a black I/O
shield compared to the typical steel metal color. It also has a Republic of
Gamers logo on its I/O shield along with basic labels for each I/O port. It’s
just me being overly critical but I also like the labels they put on each port.
Low end motherboards don’t even bother with these details.
You’ll also find four black SATA cables. Yes, they’re not
really expensive but it’s nice to have plus other motherboards only provide the
user with two so four is really good so you will not need to buy extras. It’s a
nice bonus. Two of those have a right angled end. For all you RGB lovers out
there, Asus also gave owners the Strix H270F the ability to customize their
lighting setup and manage your colors even further. There’s an Aura RGB
lighting extension cable that will help hook up more than one RGB lighting
strip to your motherboard.
